Welcome to Suburbia

This website is dedicated to Chapter 5 in David Fleming's City of Rhetoric. It will serve as a guide, a way to dig deeper into the text to truly understand what Fleming's intentions were.

In this particular chapter, Fleming discusses the attempt to help public housing residents move out of the inner city, into job rich suburbs located on the outskirts. This whole process started in Chicago after the Gautreaux trial (see tab) and expanded into a nationwide effort.

Fleming focuses on one Chicago suburb in particular: Schaumburg. However, we will also apply some of Fleming's ideas to New York, another major city that has many things in common with Chicago. All of these topics, as well as the motivations and thought processes behind his theories will be presented in the various sections of this website.
