I designed a new course for the new Master's program in clinical and translational research; the course (BIST 507) has not yet been offered so no syllabus has been finalized as of July 2011.

Outcomes (BIST-507, 3 units)

Clinical and translational research must focus on, or lead to, clinical manifestations of health and disease. An understanding of clinical outcomes and endpoints, including symptom checklists, biomarkers, imaging results, and patient reported outcomes, is therefore crucial for the translation of results throughout a systems science approach to medicine to the patient and the community. This course will emphasize reliability and validity, their estimation, interpretation, strengths and limitations. These concepts will be explored with respect to the selection and development of outcome measures, and the validation and benchmarking of objective and subjective outcomes. Estimating and documenting inter-rater reliability, consistency, and longitudinal fidelity of outcomes to diseases over time will be emphasized throughout the course. Additionally, the critical review of literature, to identify the best empirically-supported indicator (BESI) of a disease will be taught and practised.
